The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have confirmed that an operation conducted at the Asanko Gold Ghana Limited concession turned violent, leading to confrontations between soldiers and illegal miners.

In a press release, GAF explained that the operation formed part of its mandate to protect the country’s natural resources and clamp down on illegal mining activities that pose a threat to the environment and national security. According to the military, armed men suspected to be illegal miners engaged troops in a confrontation, resulting in the violence.

The statement emphasized that troops acted strictly within the rules of engagement to safeguard lives, protect the concession, and restore law and order. GAF further noted that it remained committed to conducting its operations professionally and in line with national laws.

While acknowledging the unfortunate turn of events, the military reiterated its resolve to continue supporting government’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey,” which has devastated water bodies and farmlands across the country.

The Armed Forces also assured the public that investigations were underway to establish the full details of the incident. It pledged transparency and urged communities to cooperate with security agencies to ensure peace and sustainable management of Ghana’s mineral resources.

GAF concluded by reaffirming its neutrality, professionalism, and dedication to protecting the sovereignty and stability of the nation.
