The Centre for International Maritime Affairs, Ghana (CIMAG) has called for renewed commitment to improving the welfare, safety and career opportunities of seafarers, urging governments, shipowners and maritime stakeholders to recognize the critical role they play in sustaining global trade and economic development.
The appeal was made in a statement issued to commemorate the 2026 Day of the Seafarer, observed annually on June 25 under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
This year’s celebration is themed, “Carrying World Trade. Carrying the Risks,” highlighting the indispensable contribution of seafarers to international commerce despite the numerous occupational hazards they face.

Signed by CIMAG Executive Director, Albert Derrick Fiatui, the statement paid tribute to Ghanaian and international seafarers for their resilience, professionalism and unwavering dedication to keeping global supply chains operational.
“CIMAG salutes our gallant seafarers, men and women, who keep global supply chains moving under often difficult and hazardous conditions. Your dedication, professionalism and resilience form the backbone of international commerce and Ghana’s maritime economy,” the statement said.
The maritime policy think tank noted that while seafarers remain indispensable to world trade, they continue to confront significant challenges, including demanding working conditions, safety risks and prolonged periods away from their families.
CIMAG therefore urged governments, shipping companies, port authorities and industry stakeholders to implement policies that strengthen motivation, improve welfare conditions and ensure equitable opportunities for all seafarers.
The organization also underscored the need to increase female participation in the maritime sector through deliberate recruitment, training, retention and protection measures.
According to the statement, empowering more women to pursue careers at sea is essential to building a sustainable, inclusive and future-ready maritime industry capable of meeting emerging global demands.
CIMAG joined the IMO and the global maritime community in celebrating seafarers worldwide, expressing appreciation for their sacrifices and commitment to international trade.
The organization concluded by emphasizing that recognizing and investing in seafarers ultimately safeguards national economic interests.
“A nation that honours its seafarers secures its trade and future,” Mr. Fiatui stated.
