The District Chief Executive Officer of the West Ada District in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, Jerry John Amornortey Tanihu, has hinted that the assembly will drag persons who refuse to partake in the ongoing cleanup exercises to serve as deterrent to others.

His comment was necessitated by the poor patronage of residents of Sege in an earlier exercise held last Tuesday.

While communities such as Akplabanya, Anyamam and Koluedor massively tuned up to clean their environments in the one week cleanup exercise scheduled by the assembly, residents and traders of Sege sat in their homes and shops and watched virtually only assembly staff clean the township.

The unconcerned attitudes did not sink well with the DCE who in an interview with VoiceAfricaonline at Koluedor disclosed that the assembly will use the police in the next exercise slated for Friday December 19, 2025, and any person who refuses to get involved would be arrested and and dealt with at the law court.

“Tomorrow we are going to Sege township proper, and I’m using this medium to let them know that those who will not partake tomorrow, it will be a different story. Tomorrow we are using the police, and the court is also there. Anybody who will not take part and will open the store will be arrested and send to court” he stressed.

Mr. Tanihu, was appalled to hear some residents demand monetary motivation before they join in the exercise, claiming that it is the duty of Zoomlion personnel. “People were telling us that it is for Zoomlion and if we want them to do Zoomlion’s work, we should give them money” he revealed.

The West Ada DCE also raised dissatisfaction at the minimal involvement of religious bodies in the sanitation drive. “Last we went to clean an area that belongs to a church but none of the members from that church was there”. He attributed the unpleasant situation to the lack of proper engagement and promised to lead that charge to ensure that churches are integral of the cleanliness agenda.

He therefore warned all and sandry to comply with the Friday’s exercise or face the law.

Sanitation is a key performance indicator the president, John Dramani Mahama, had since the assumption of office some eleven months on set for his MMDCEs. The issue is that important for the West Ada DCE since the district is among the those that record cases of Chorela almost every year due to prevailing insanitary conditions.

The one week-long exercise which began on Monday December 15, 2025, aims to rid communities of filth and make for a sound environment especially this yuletide. It would be climaxed on Saturday.
