PSC Tema Shipyard is expected to resume full operations on Wednesday July 8, 2026 following a temporary shutdown caused by Monday’s heavy rains, with management assuring clients that the flooding has been contained and will not affect the facility’s long-term operations.

The downpour led to floodwaters breaching the shipyard’s pump house, forcing a brief suspension of activities at one of Ghana’s leading ship repair facilities.

Following an inspection of the affected area, Board Chairman Dr. George Sipa Yankey commended staff for their swift response in managing the situation and minimizing the impact of the flooding.

He disclosed that engineers have identified the cause of the breach and that the board has approved immediate interventions to prevent a recurrence. These include the construction of a protective water barrier around vulnerable sections of the facility and an upgrade of the shipyard’s drainage system.

Dr. Sipa Yankey said President John Dramani Mahama is being kept informed of developments through regular briefings and reaffirmed the board’s commitment to positioning PSC Tema Shipyard as the most efficient and competitive ship repair facility in Africa.

He assured shipowners, clients and other stakeholders that the incident represented a temporary operational setback rather than a structural challenge to the shipyard.

Chief Executive Officer Alhaji Osman Sulemana described the flooding as unprecedented, noting that it was the first such incident recorded at the shipyard since its establishment.

He said although the volume of water was overwhelming, management had quickly identified the source of the problem and was implementing practical measures to strengthen the facility against future flooding.

The CEO further disclosed that Slipway Two, which services smaller vessels, including fishing boats, remained fully operational throughout the incident because it was not affected by the floodwaters.

Management expressed confidence that all services would return to normal by Wednesday, assuring customers that the shipyard remains fully committed to delivering reliable and efficient ship repair and maintenance services.
