The Tema Executive Lions Club, a  part of District 418 Ghana, has partnered Republic Road Basic School in Community Four, Tema, to undertake a tree-planting exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability among pupils.

Dr Mrs Rejoice Lawer, Charter President of the Tema Executive Lions Club, said the initiative formed part of the club’s global agenda to protect the environment and promote responsible citizenship.

She explained that the exercise was designed to instil environmental responsibility in pupils and encourage them to view environmental stewardship as an essential element of leadership.

“We want to plant hope and show students that caring for the environment is an important part of being a leader,” she said.

Dr Lawer also highlighted the vision of the club’s founder, Melvin Jones, noting that service to humanity remained central to achieving personal fulfilment.

She assured the school of the club’s continued partnership in future initiatives aimed at community development and youth empowerment.

Mrs Mavis Jesse, Headmistress of Republic Road Basic School, expressed appreciation to the Lions Club for the gesture, describing the project as relevant and beneficial to the academic curriculum.

She said pupils studied topics such as photosynthesis and environmental science, making the practical tree-planting exercise a valuable hands-on learning experience.

Mrs Jesse also highlighted the environmental benefits of trees, including their role in carbon absorption to help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Mr Fiadzoe E. Winner, an officer from the Horticulture Unit of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), educated the pupils on the importance of trees, noting that they provided shade, improved air quality, and prevented soil erosion.

He demonstrated proper tree-planting techniques, advising pupils to plant trees away from power lines and buildings, dig adequately sized holes, firm the soil around planted seedlings, and water the plants immediately after planting.

The programme ended with an interactive question-and-answer session during which pupils demonstrated a good understanding of the lessons taught.

Members of the Lions Club present included Ms Angela Akorfa Lettsa, Ms Priscilla Agyei Mintah, Mr Daniel Kofi Asante, Mr Roger Parkins, and Ms Priscilla Asamoah
