The people of Amedzofe, the “City in the Clouds” in the Ho West District of the Volta Region, have launched a bold storytelling initiative to preserve their unique cultural heritage and project the town as a leading tourism hub in Ghana.
Preserving Sacred History
Amedzofe, which dates back to the 16th century migration from Ahanta, is rich in history and traditions. From the Sacred Forest of Oneme, where the legendary woman warrior Osawapechi shielded the vulnerable during the Ashanti–Evedome war, to the Missionary Cross installed by German missionaries in 1939, the community blends resilience, faith, and culture.
The storytelling project aims to document these stories, promote cultural tourism, and inspire younger generations.
Education & Determination
The town is also celebrated as one of the first centers of education in the Volta Region, with schools dating back to 1888. Its people’s resilience is evident in their 40-day communal effort to rebuild a collapsed classroom block, now serving as an administrative building.
Tourism Attractions
Amedzofe and its neighboring community Amedjope are blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, including:
Ote Falls – with a stunning canopy walkway and refreshing mist.
Lower Falls & Hiking Trails – scenic routes from Biakpa, Fume, and Bacheme.
Missionary Cemetery 1889 resting place of early German missionaries and pioneering pastors.
Stone-built Rest House (1943) – once linked to General I.K. Acheampong’s visits and later detention.
The community also boasts the Vane-Amedjope road, manually constructed in 1944, a symbol of communal sacrifice.
Traditions & Identity
Amedzofe’s womanhood rites remain a sacred passage, with rituals involving brown rice. The people believe a woman must undergo this rite to be accepted by her ancestors after death. Such traditions highlight the blend of spirituality, identity, and heritage that defines Amedzofe.
Community Voice
Launching the initiative, community leaders called on government, investors, and cultural institutions to support Amedzofe’s vision of becoming a premier cultural and eco-tourism destination.
Our history is our power, our culture is our pride, and our landscape is our gift. Amedzofe is ready to share this with the world,” the elders declared.
Looking Ahead
The initiative will feature storytelling sessions, cultural performances, and educational tours. Plans are underway to expand tourism infrastructure, host annual cultural events, and position Amedzofe as a beacon of heritage-driven development.
