Two male students of the Nalerigu Senior High School in the North East Region have been shot and killed following a brazen attack by unidentified gunmen on the evening of Saturday, July 26, 2025.

The victims, identified only by their first names, Lukman and Gilbert, were reportedly in their dormitory when the assailants stormed the school premises and opened fire. Both students died on the spot.

Dasmani Fuseini, the Assembly Member for the Denugu Electoral Area — the hometown of the victims — confirmed the tragic incident in an interview. He disclosed that the bodies of the deceased are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

“The entire community is in shock. We are in touch with the police to retrieve the bodies and perform the necessary rites,” Mr. Fuseini said.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. However, sources familiar with the situation suggest a possible link to the long-standing Bawku conflict, which has witnessed sporadic violence spilling into surrounding areas in recent months.

In a disturbing development believed to be connected, another student was reportedly killed in a separate shooting incident at Bawku Senior High School. Security agencies have yet to officially confirm whether the two incidents are directly related.

The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the killings. Meanwhile, tension is mounting among parents and residents in the affected communities, with renewed calls for enhanced security presence in schools within conflict-prone zones.

Authorities are urging calm as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attacks. More updates are expected as details emerge.
