The Pan-African media initiative AfroMedia has lauded the appointment of Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris as the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations and Head of the African Mission in New York, describing it as a strong endorsement of Africa’s growing diplomatic stature and unity on the world stage.

In an official statement released over the weekend, Hassan Ghazaly, anthropological researcher and founder of AfroMedia, expressed deep pride in the ambassador’s selection. He hailed the appointment as a testament to Egypt’s trusted leadership in continental and international diplomacy and a reflection of Ambassador Idris’s extensive experience in multilateral negotiations and development diplomacy.

“This appointment crowns a remarkable diplomatic journey and reaffirms Egypt’s credibility and leadership within Africa and beyond,” Ghazaly said. “Ambassador Idris embodies the competence and vision needed to advance Africa’s interests at the global level.”

Ghazaly highlighted Egypt’s historic role in championing African liberation movements and representing the voices of the continent’s peoples during critical moments in history. He recalled how Cairo once served as a launchpad for African revolutionary leaders to address the UN during the fight against colonialism.

He noted that the timing of the appointment — coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations — makes it even more symbolic, especially considering Egypt’s legacy as one of the founding members of the UN and its consistent advocacy for African issues.

AfroMedia views the appointment as a key step in enhancing collaboration between the African Union and the United Nations, particularly in areas of peace, security, and development. It also sees it as part of a broader push to empower African professionals within global institutions.

Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris brings decades of experience in diplomacy, having previously served as Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, as well as Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union. In 2024, he was appointed by the UN Secretary-General to serve on the Independent High-Level Advisory Board of the UN Peacebuilding Fund.

Founded in February 2021, AfroMedia is a Pan-African initiative under the Global Solidarity Network that promotes journalistic collaboration across African nations. Operating under the slogan “The Voice of Egypt… The Voice of Africa,” the initiative is committed to building media bridges between African communities, enhancing the capacity of African journalists, and portraying a more realistic and united image of the continent.

AfroMedia reiterated its mission to support African voices and narratives on global platforms and sees Ambassador Idris’s new position as a pivotal moment in the collective journey of African diplomacy and media advocacy.
