The Tema Metropolitan Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Hajia Zainab Abdulai, has warned residents in Tema and surrounding communities to stop dumping refuse indiscriminately into drains and gutters, describing the practice as a major cause of flooding during the rainy season.

Speaking during the distribution of relief items to victims of the June 29, 2026 floods at Tema Newtown, Hajia Abdulai said blocked drains continue to contribute significantly to the flooding that affects many parts of the country whenever heavy rains occur.

According to her, indiscriminate dumping of waste not only chokes drainage systems but also destroys the beauty of the environment and exposes residents to various diseases.

She disclosed that more than 3,000 people and 1,580 households were affected or displaced by the recent floods in Tema.

The Metro NADMO Director said the organisation conducted an assessment of the situation immediately after the floods and submitted a report to its headquarters for the necessary intervention.

The relief items distributed included bags of rice, mattresses, drinking cups, plates, washing bowls, buckets, blankets, as well as washing and bathing soap.

Hajia Abdulai assured the affected residents that NADMO had sufficient stock to support all identified victims and urged them to remain calm as the organisation continued its response efforts.

She also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the Director-General of NADMO for taking steps to ensure that flood victims receive the needed assistance.

The donation forms part of ongoing efforts by NADMO to provide emergency support to residents affected by the June 29 flooding, which inundated several communities in Tema and displaced hundreds of families.
