SONABEL, the Burkina Faso’s state power company has commenced controlled spillage of excess water from the Bagre Dam.
The gates were opened on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 9:00 a.m.
In a notice issued a day before, SONABEL announced that following heavy rainfall in recent days, the reservoir water level had reached a critical threshold, warranting the evacuation of excess water necessary.
According to the Water Resources Commission (WRC), the reservoir level as of Thursday, August 27 was 234.64 metres with a filling rate of 95.19%, just below its normal level of 235.00 metres.
The spillage had initially been scheduled for August 11, 2026 if water levels reached 234.00 metres, but was postponed after the level stood at 233.08 metres on August 11.
The WRC and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have cautioned farmers, fisherfolk, and residents along the White Volta River, particularly in the Upper East, North East, Northern and Oti Regions, to move to higher ground and avoid crossing flooded areas.
Communities along the Kubore stretch of the White Volta have been placed on high alert, with farmers reportedly rushing to harvest crops ahead of the downstream flooding.
The annual spillage from the Bagre Dam has over the years triggered severe flooding across parts of northern Ghana, destroying farms and homes.
