Seven Arrested For Illegal Mining At Abora

Police in the Central Region have arrested seven individuals in connection with illegal mining activities at Abora in the Upper Denkyira West District. The suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation on a targeted illegal mining site.
In a decisive move to clamp down on illegal mining, the Central Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals who were reportedly engaged in unlawful mining activities at Abora in the Upper Denkyira West District.
The suspects have been identified as Latif Abdul Gyimah, 55; Mohammed Bello, 44; George Azu, 52; Kingsley Owusu, 23; Sampson Afadzi, 45; Simon Atakpo, 21; and Andrews Otto, 26. They were arrested following an intelligence-driven operation conducted at a location where they were actively operating.
During the raid, police retrieved a cache of mining-related equipment and weapons. Items recovered include one single-barrel shotgun, two pump-action shotguns (Mossberg 500A12GA) with serial numbers T069032 and T075882, and twenty-six live cartridges. The team also seized two excavators, two Hyundai excavator monitors, three unregistered motorbikes, an unregistered Haojin tricycle, and a newly installed water pump machine.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to retrieve additional excavators and machinery from the illegal site.
All suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. The retrieved weapons and equipment have been secured as evidence.
The police command has reiterated its commitment to intensifying operations to combat illegal mining and safeguard the environment.
