Heidelberg Materials and CBI Ghana Ltd have launched the world’s largest industrial-scale flash calciner for clay in Ghana, marking a significant milestone in the country’s cement industry. The plant, with a capacity of over 400,000 tonnes of calcined clay per year, is already producing low-carbon cement, reducing clinker content and CO₂ emissions.

Replacing traditional cement clinker with calcined clay can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 40%. The project created over 300 local jobs and utilises Ghana’s rich clay resources.

Ghana’s cement consumption expected to double in the next 15 years, offering a large market for sustainable solutions. The project serves as a blueprint for Heidelberg Materials’ global decarbonisation strategy

The calcined clay technology enables Ghana to reduce dependence on clinker imports, promoting local production and sustainable construction practices. Heidelberg Materials aims to replicate this success in other locations, driving the transition to lower-emission cement production worldwide.
