Friends of Bawumia 2008 has donated food items and essential supplies to the Accra Rehabilitation Centre as part of activities marking the 63rd birthday of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The donation, made on behalf of Dr. Bawumia, was intended to support the welfare and daily needs of persons at the centre.
The items included 10 bags of rice, tubers of yam, bottled water, toilet rolls, baskets of tomatoes and garden eggs, crates of eggs, detergents and other essential supplies.
Speaking during the presentation, the Chief Operating Officer of Friends of Bawumia 2008, Barbra Macara Marcogun, said the gesture formed part of the group’s decision to commemorate Dr. Bawumia’s birthday by supporting vulnerable persons in society.
She said the group considered it important to reach out to the Accra Rehabilitation Centre and provide supplies that would contribute to meeting the daily needs of its beneficiaries.
Ms. Marcogun also called on individuals, organisations and institutions to support persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, stressing that their welfare should be a collective responsibility.
Calls for stronger enforcement of disability laws

Beyond the donation, Ms. Marcogun called for stronger enforcement of disability laws to ensure that public facilities are accessible and friendly to persons with disabilities.
She observed that although policies and legal frameworks existed to protect persons with disabilities, their implementation required greater attention.
“The disability laws have been overlooked. Let’s strengthen the policies and enforce them to make access to facilities friendly for persons with disabilities,” she said.
She urged the relevant authorities to ensure that existing policies translated into practical improvements in accessibility and the living conditions of persons with disabilities.
Ms. Marcogun further stressed that support for persons with disabilities should extend beyond occasional donations, urging the public to demonstrate sustained commitment to their welfare and dignity.
She encouraged individuals and organisations to contribute in various ways to improve conditions at rehabilitation centres and ensure that vulnerable persons received the support they needed.
The donation forms part of the group’s activities to mark Dr. Bawumia’s birthday, with a call for greater public participation in supporting persons with disabilities and improving their access to essential services.
