Dancehall artist Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, has been detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as part of an ongoing investigation into the tax obligations surrounding his luxury Lamborghini Urus.
Shatta Wale voluntarily reported to EOCO’s offices on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, accompanied by his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo, to assist investigators with questions relating to the 2019 yellow Lamborghini Urus that was seized from his Trassaco Valley residence in June during a joint operation involving the FBI and U.S. authorities.
The inquiry focuses on the tax implications of the vehicle, which foreign investigators allege is linked to proceeds of fraud involving Ghanaian businessman Nana Kwabena Amuah. Shatta Wale has denied any wrongdoing, insisting he purchased the car legally for US $150,000 and has no knowledge of its alleged illicit origins.
The detention comes less than 24 hours after the musician showcased another newly acquired purple Lamborghini, valued at about US $260,000, a move that fueled public attention on his lifestyle and wealth.
In a statement, Shatta Wale’s management confirmed his detention but stressed that he was cooperating fully with authorities. The team appealed to his fan base, the Shatta Movement (SM Family), to remain calm and avoid speculation as legal processes unfold. His lawyers are working to secure his release while he continues to assist EOCO with its investigations.
The case adds to Shatta Wale’s string of controversies, including a hoax shooting incident in 2021 and his high-profile altercation at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards in 2019.
EOCO has yet to release an official statement on the progress of the investigation.
