SEA EROSION, WEST ADA NEGLECTED

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Communities along the West Ada coastline express a sense of neglect as the atlantic ocean sweep their houses away destroying properties and altering lives.

They raised the concern at a stakeholders’ meeting to brainstorm on how to, with a renewed voice influence government to pay attention to their plight.

The prevailing situation is exacerbated by the stalled sea defence project in the East Ada District and the ongoing one in the Ningo-Prampram District by way of exerting pressure on West Ada now caught in the middle.

From Wekumagbe down to Kablevu, which were several meters away from he shore are currently being swallowed by the Sea. A few residents who have the means had to relocate mostly to hardly available farmlands, a situation which portends another problem for crop farming in the area. However, several others who lack the wherewithal still live in the life-threatening environment awaiting miracle to occur.

In view of this, the all-important meeting by chiefs, assembly members and chief fishermen along the West Ada coast met at Anyamam, to discuss ways to push for the central government to deal with the situation before communities on that enclave eventually enter the Sea soon.

The West Ada NADMO Director, Eric Nii Doku Abayateye, who was a facilitator of the meeting laments that the area continue to receive no attention as properties are destroyed and scores of lives threatened by the ravaging Sea. Mr. Abayateye, expressed dissatisfaction at how governments have neglected the area saying “You know the sea defence started from Azizanya to Totope who have a secured coastal belt unlike this side of Ada, and then jumped to Ningo-Prampram, we can’t understand the reason why” he stressed.

The West Ada NADMO Director therefore draws the current administration’s attention to their plight calling for redress before they exist no more. “A lot of properties went into the Sea and this is the time our president has to listen to the people of West Ada and come to our aid” he added.

Similar engagement is in the offing the following week on Tuesday July 1, 2025, to continue with the idea sharing on the way forward on the pressing development.
