The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced that controlled water spillage from the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso will commence on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
The Commission said the planned spillage follows information received from SONABEL, the operator of the Bagré Dam, regarding the dam’s rising reservoir levels.
According to the WRC, as of Thursday, August 27, 2026, the water level of the Bagré Dam stood at 234.64 metres, representing a filling rate of 95.19 percent.
The reservoir level is currently 0.36 metres below the dam’s normal operating level of 235.0 metres.
The Commission has consequently advised communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas to take the necessary precautions ahead of the controlled release of water.
It urged residents and other stakeholders to strictly adhere to safety guidelines, directives and advisories issued by their respective local assemblies and relevant agencies.
The announcement is expected to heighten preparedness among communities downstream of the White Volta, particularly those located in areas that could be affected by increased river flows following the release.
The Water Resources Commission said the notice was issued to inform stakeholders and the general public and to facilitate the necessary precautionary measures ahead of the scheduled spillage.
