The Burkina Faso Electricity Company, SONABEL, will commence controlled spillage of the Bagre’ Dam on Friday, August 28, 2026, following the increasing rise in the water levels.

According to the Water Resources Commission (WRC), the decision became necessary after closely monitoring the reservoir, which stood at 93.98 % as of Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Residents along the Volta basin in the about six regions, particularly those closer to the banks are entreated to relocate to higher ground for their safety.

The Burkibee authority earlier in August hinted the possibility of undertaking a controlled spilling as the water levels rose to avert causing damage to the dam.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, has began some safety works in the respective regions to protect life and property.

VoiceAfricaonline.com closely monitors the development and will update the public accordingly.
