Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has been re-elected as President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) after emerging victorious in a tightly contested national election held on Monday, June 30, 2025.

Dwumfuor, who first assumed the presidency in 2022, secured 445 votes, representing 64.49% of the total valid votes cast. His main contender, Charles Yao Mawusi, garnered 245 votes, constituting 35.51% of the ballots. A total of over 800 accredited members of the Association voted in the elections, which were held simultaneously across the country’s ten regions.

The elections, supervised by the GJA’s Elections Committee, also filled five other national executive positions, in addition to various regional leadership roles critical to the Association’s operations.

Despite entering the race late, Mawusi, a seasoned journalist and former executive, mounted a strong challenge that reshaped the dynamics of the contest. His unexpected candidacy compelled the incumbent to recalibrate his campaign, reinforce grassroots mobilization, and secure renewed endorsements from key media stakeholders.

Dwumfuor’s re-election affirms the confidence reposed in his leadership by the media fraternity. His first term was marked by initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of journalists, enhancing press freedom advocacy, and strengthening the institutional capacity of the GJA.

The newly elected national executives are expected to be officially sworn into office in the coming days to commence their term of service.

The Ghana Journalists Association remains the foremost professional body for journalists in the country, with a mandate to defend press freedom, promote ethical journalism, and support the professional development of its member.
