The Greater Accra Regional Deputy Director in charge of Inspection at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Habibu Awudu Mohammed, has called on young people to stay away from drug abuse and other social vices that could negatively affect their future.
According to him, the youth possess enormous potential to contribute meaningfully to national development and must therefore remain disciplined, focused, and committed to pursuing productive ventures rather than indulging in harmful activities.
Mr. Habibu Awudu Mohammed made the remarks during a community outreach programme in Afienya where meat packs, bags of rice, and cooking oil were distributed to residents as part of activities marking this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebrations.
The two-day humanitarian exercise, which has become an annual tradition initiated by the NADMO official, benefited both Muslims and non-Muslims within the community.
Addressing residents during the outreach, Mr. Habibu Awudu Mohammed said many young people continue to fall prey to drug abuse and other destructive lifestyles, a situation he described as worrying for the future of the country.
He stressed the need for the youth to channel their energy into education, skills training, entrepreneurship, and other productive activities that would improve their lives and contribute positively to society.
Mr. Habibu explained that the donation exercise was inspired by the teachings of the Holy Quran, which encourage compassion, generosity, and support for the vulnerable and less privileged in society.
He noted that Eid-ul-Adha presents an opportunity for Muslims to demonstrate love, sacrifice, and solidarity with people in need, irrespective of religious or social background.
The NADMO Deputy Director further advised young people to embrace good morals, respect for authority, humility, and hard work, stressing that such values remain critical to personal growth and national development.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely support amid current economic challenges. They commended Mr. Habibu Awudu Mohammed for consistently remembering vulnerable members of the community during festive occasions.
The outreach formed part of broader efforts to promote social cohesion, community support, and peaceful coexistence among residents in the area.
