The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has reaffirmed government’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s territorial waters following a recent pirate attack on Ghanaian fishermen.
In a press release issued in reaction to the incident, the Ministry expressed deep concern over what it described as a disturbing attack on local fishermen at sea.
“The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has noted with deep concern the recent pirate attack on Ghanaian fishermen,” the statement said.
The Ministry, however, confirmed that 71 fishermen who were attacked and held at sea have been rescued and are safe.
It commended the swift, coordinated and professional response of the Ghana Army and the Ghana Navy, as well as the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, for ensuring the safe return of the fishermen.
The Ministry also praised the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, for her engagement with affected fishing communities and state institutions, noting that her intervention contributed to the successful rescue efforts.
According to the statement, government’s resolve to protect the country’s marine resources and coastal livelihoods is further strengthened by the newly enacted Fisheries and Aquaculture Act 225 (Act 1146), which enhances enforcement, monitoring and safety mechanisms within the fisheries sector.
As part of ongoing reforms, the Ministry announced additional measures aimed at improving security and welfare in the industry. These include enhanced registration and licensing of fishing canoes, the introduction of GPS tracking and long-range communication systems for artisanal vessels, and the rollout of insurance and pension schemes for fishermen.
The Ministry emphasised that these interventions are designed not only to prevent future attacks but also to promote sustainable fisheries management and protect the livelihoods of thousands of Ghanaians who depend on the sector.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to strengthen maritime surveillance and collaboration among security agencies to ensure Ghana’s territorial waters remain safe from criminal activity.
