The government of Burkina Faso has taken a significant move toward boosting local dairy production by importing 710 high-performance pregnant cows from Brazil as part of a national initiative to reduce reliance on imported milk.

The land of upright people currently spends an estimated 22 billion CFA francs annually on milk imports. Authorities say the new initiative is structured to strengthen domestic milk production and gradually eliminate the need for foreign dairy supplies.

The cattle were officially received by Minister of Agriculture, Major Ismael Sombié, at the country’s livestock breeding station. According to officials, the imported cows are high-yield dairy breeds expected to significantly improve the country’s milk production capacity.

Project experts say the initiative could generate about 1.2 million litres of milk in its first year, with projections indicating that production could triple within the next five years as the breeding program expands.

The move forms part of Burkina Faso’s broader strategy to enhance food security, support local farmers, and reduce the country’s dependence on imported agricultural products.
