The Ada Songor Lagoon Association (ASLA), reiterates the natural potency and purity of salt produced from the Ada Songor Lagoon for the public consumption.

According to the association, the Songor Lagoon which is their main source of brine, the raw material for salt production undergoes a natural self purification to get rid of all impurities before eventually forming.

The Acting Chairperson of ASLA, Nene Mailo Dadebom Anim ll, made the revelation at a two-day workshop organised by the the Food and Drugs Authority, FDA, for Ada artizanal salt producers at Sege in the West Ada District of the Greater Accra Region.

Nene Mailo Dadebom Anim ll who doubles as the chief of Toflokpo noted that after water had collected, the lagoon pass through a natural phenomenon where unwanted biological, physical and chemical properties that can contaminate the salt are eradicated.

Not only that, other forms of complex uneanted salt are also separated out during this mechanism to arrive at the sodium chloride which eventually crystallises.

“You will see bubbles all over with some stench emanating as dead fishes and all unwanted paticles coming our. The salinity of the water then improves continuously up to the stage where fine salt finally crystallises” he explained.

This phenomenon he said is known to producers who stay clear of the process to exhaust.

His public education became necessary in the face of perceptions as though salt is unwholesome for consumption without iodization. It was however revealed at the workshop that the Ada salt contains some level of iodine in its natural form and cannot be deemed unwholesome without iodization.

The traditional leader therefore allayed any fears of the consuming public and enjoined Ghanaians and beyond to use the Songor Salt for its natural properties.

Abraham Ahumah Tetteh, Public Relations Officer and Oganizer for ASLA, admitted the need to deploy good manufacturing practices in their production to apart form making the salt clean for consumption, place premium on it for marketing purposes.

Tens of participants from several communities around the Songor Lagoon who participated in the work agreed that adherence to standard and good manufacturing practices are crucial in producing such an important food component.
