The Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ho Teaching Hospital, Dr. John Tampuri, has urged the youth and the general public to take weekly health walks seriously, describing them as an important step to living longer and healthier lives.

Dr. Tampuri noted that the initiative, first championed by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, is worth replicating across all regions to promote fitness and prevent lifestyle-related diseases.

The call follows the example of some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ho Central, who have begun implementing the weekly health walk initiative inspired by the Chief of Staff.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Tampuri, who served for over three decades in Ghana’s health sector, emphasized that regular walking is one of the simplest yet most effective ways of preventing disease.“Too often, people wait until sickness strikes before rushing to the hospital. But prevention is always better than cure. Doctors don’t give life; our duty is to help improve quality of life. And quality of life means being able to eat naturally, walk without support, and live without restrictions,” he said.

He stressed that exercise and diet are the two key habits that must change if both the youth and the elderly are to enjoy long and healthy lives. Dr. Tampuri therefore encouraged communities across the Volta Region and beyond to adopt the “Walk With Julius Debrah” campaign, describing it as a social movement that could transform lifestyles and reduce pressure on the healthcare system.

The former NDC Women’s Organizer for Ho Central Constituency, Shiba Happy Aloeto, also underscored the importance of the initiative, explaining that it goes beyond politics. “This walk is all about health. We are inspired by the Chief of Staff because we believe that healthy people build healthy nations. That is why we decided to replicate this initiative here in the Volta Region, starting from Ho Central. Very soon, we will extend it to other constituencies to engage our brothers and sisters,” she said*

She further noted that the next walk is scheduled for September 27, calling on participants from other areas to join.

The Walk With Julius Debrah in Ho Central lasted more than two hours, with participants marching through the principal streets before ending at the Children’s Park, where they engaged in aerobics and other exercises.END
