A fatal road accident at the University of Cape Coast West Gate on the main Cape Coast-Takoradi-Accra Highway has left one person dead and several others injured after a tipper truck veered off its lane and ploughed into multiple vehicles.
The incident occurred around 12:48 PM when the driver of a Donfeng tipper truck, Bright Essel, 29, lost control of the sand-loaded vehicle while driving from Bronyibima towards the DVLA Junction. The truck crashed over the kerb and violently struck a stationary Nissan Sentra (CR 1756-12), a Honda CRV (CR 319-20), and an Apsonic motor tricycle that were waiting to join the main highway.
The tricycle was being ridden by 26-year-old George Ayensu Peters, while the other vehicles were driven by Kofi Kum, 57, and Anita Ansah, 37. All vehicles were severely damaged in the crash.
Six individuals sustained injuries in the accident, including Charles Ayensu Peters, 47, Prince Anamag Baidoo, 27, and 19-year-old Wilfred Awusi Ninson. They were rushed to the University of Cape Coast Hospital for emergency care. However, young Ninson was pronounced dead on arrival by the medical officer on duty. His body has since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police from the Cape Coast command swiftly responded to the scene, secured the area, and documented the damage. All the wrecked vehicles were towed and impounded for testing by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
The suspect truck driver, Bright Essel, has been arrested and is currently in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations. Police have also issued medical forms to the surviving victims for official assessment and treatment confirmation.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution, particularly around intersections and major highway junctions, to prevent similar tragedies.
