Police in Accra have launched a full-scale investigation following the gruesome murder of an Immigration Officer, Stephen King Amoah, whose charred remains were discovered on Tuesday, July 9, 2025. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the case.

According to a statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, the late officer had been declared missing since July 4, 2025. His severely burnt body was found dumped in a gutter near the GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate in Accra.

The Police said the discovery was made in the early hours of July 9. Investigators from the Taifa Police joined the scene and later escorted the complainant and six relatives of the deceased to the Police Hospital morgue, where, despite the extent of burns, the family was able to positively identify the body as that of Stephen King Amoah.

Preliminary investigations revealed that on the night of July 3, the deceased left his home at Ashongman Estate after receiving WhatsApp images of cash bundles from a man identified as Bright Aweh. The suspect had reportedly invited Mr. Amoah to a local drinking spot to settle an outstanding financial transaction. He never returned home, and his mobile phone was found switched off that same night.

Police operations led to the arrest of Bright Aweh, who, during interrogation, admitted to giving the deceased an amount of GHS 500,000. He claimed the money was intended partly for debt repayment and partly to be held for later collection. However, his statements regarding the source of the funds and his exact relationship with the deceased were inconsistent and contradictory.

The Accra Regional Police Command has condemned the incident and assured the public that no effort will be spared in bringing all persons connected to the crime to justice.

“This is a heinous and deeply troubling crime. We are treating this case with the utmost urgency and diligence,” the statement read.

The Police are calling on members of the public who may have any relevant information to come forward and assist the investigation by reporting to the nearest police station or contacting emergency lines 18555 or 192.

The tragic death of Stephen King Amoah has sent shockwaves through the security community and the general public, reigniting concerns over safety and accountability within the capital.

Investigations continue.
