The Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has met with stakeholders to discuss ways to prevent electoral violence.

The closed door meeting which was attended by the IGP, Electoral Commission officials, representatives from the National Democratic Congress, the New Patriotic Party, LPG and All People’s Party, was to deliberate on security arrangements for the Akwatia by-election slated for September 2, 2025.

The IGP briefing the media after the meeting, the IGP disclosed that there will be no military deployment in Akwatia, saying the Ghana Police Service has enough men and women to provide adequate security to ensure the conduct of a peaceful by-election.

The NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, described the meeting as a fruitful one, adding that all persons including politically exposed persons who directly have nothing to do with the Akwatia by-election will not be allowed in any of the centres. Dr. Taknko, disclosed that that not withstanding, the NDC is vigilant and have their eyes firmly on the ground and will not countenance any fishy conduct.

The National Organiser for the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, who also admitted that meeting was fruitful however raised a concern where the Deputy Youth Organiser of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, made a comment that they will arrest some NPP persons they believe are connected to the just ran Ablekuma North by-election if they step foot into Akwatia, asking that the police arrest him.

Dr. Rashid Tanko, in response said he sees nothing wrong about a mere comment to arrest, saying the laws of Ghana also allow citizen arrest and that there is no cause for alarm for anyone who has done nothing wrong to be worried about the said comment.

Four political parties have so far declared intentions to contest the Akwatia by-election. These are the NDC, NPP, LPG and LPP.
