Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced an emergency shutdown of the Kpong Water Treatment Plant following damage to its raw water transmission pipeline earlier today.
The shutdown, which takes immediate effect, is expected to last three days as engineers undertake emergency repair works. As a result, water supply to the entire Tema Metropolis and large parts of Accra will be interrupted until the completion of the repairs.
According to GWL, the affected areas include Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, and several surrounding communities. Customers in these localities have been advised to store sufficient water while supply is still available.
The company said it has put in place arrangements to support essential service providers, particularly schools and hospitals, during the shutdown period. Institutions requiring assistance are encouraged to contact GWL through its toll-free lines, hotlines, WhatsApp platforms, or social media handles.
GWL has assured residents that every effort is being made to complete the repairs within the stipulated timeframe. “Water supply will be restored immediately upon completion of the repair work. We sincerely regret the inconvenience this interruption may cause and appreciate the patience and understanding of our valued customers,” the utility stated in its communication.
The Kpong Treatment Plant is one of the country’s key water supply systems, serving a significant portion of the Greater Accra Region. The sudden shutdown is therefore expected to cause widespread inconvenience, with residents and businesses urged to make contingency plans until full supply is restored.
