The Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs is calling on the Mahama-led NDC government to elevate efforts at combating the worrying illegal mining (galamsey), to honour the memories of the eight individuals who lost their lives in the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash.

The eight were enroute to Obuasi, for an anti-galamsey event when the Z-9 Airforce aircraft with which they were travelling crashed claiming their lives.

President of the the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Professor King Odaifio Welentse III, after signing the book of condolences at the Defence Ministry in Accra, said, Ghana would have undemined sacrifices the eight who lost their lives made should Ghana fail to tackle the menace decisively.

“If we cannot deal with this holistically, once and for all, then those gallant soldiers died for nothing. We should all rise and deal with galamsey,” he stated.

Apart from Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, who were laid to rest on Sunday, August 10, 2025, the six other victims will be buried on Friday, August 15, 2025, after a state funeral for them at the Blackstar Square at Osu.

The call echoes the conceded views and expectations of many Ghanaians for the current administration use the deaths of the departed to step up and stop galamsey at once.
