The Article 146 Committee of Inquiry has submitted its first report to President John Dramani Mahama on three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

The committee, chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, conducted its proceedings in camera, as required by Article 146(7) and (8) of the Constitution. Despite facing false claims regarding its work, the committee refrained from making any public comments.

The inquiry examined petitions calling for the Chief Justice’s removal. In the process, the committee heard testimony from 13 witnesses for the petitioner and 12 witnesses, including expert witnesses, for the Chief Justice. Justice Pwamang emphasized that while the proceedings were held in camera, this did not mean they were secret, and limited procedural details could be disclosed.

The President will review the report and decide on the next course of action. The outcome of this process is expected to have significant implications for the judiciary and governance in Ghana.
