Deputy Director General of Ghana Education Service GES, Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi, has cautioned newly trained teachers to approach the teaching profession as a special calling, stressing their crucial role in shaping the talents and character of the country’s future leaders.
Speaking at the 16th congregation of the Ada College of Education, Professor Dzisi, emphasized that teachers occupy a central place in national development.
“Teachers play essential roles in harnessing and developing the talents of pupils and students. When teachers fail in their responsibilities, the consequences are dire, just as the mistake of a lawyer can send an innocent person to prison. A teacher’s mistake can also leave pupils roaming the streets,” Professor Dzisi said.
She added that by instilling discipline and promoting good citizenship practices, teachers can help curb challenges such as streetism and youth indiscipline. Professor Dzisi therefore urged the over 316 graduates who passed out at the ceremony to see themselves as role models, and to integrate ICT tools into their teaching to enrich learning outcomes.
The event, held under the theme “Empowering Educators: Enriching Communities”, also served as a prelude to the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Ada College of Education later this year.
Principal of the college, Professor Prince Boateng, outlined steps taken to reposition the institution, including the introduction of several income-generating ventures such as sachet water production, pastries production, and catfish farming to promote self-reliance.
He further appealed to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to designate selected colleges of education, including Ada College, as specialized institutions for training teachers in both pedagogy and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) skills. This, he said, would better equip teachers with the skills needed to nurture students’ talents and contribute to national development.
