The Government of Ghana has announced a strategic shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and other conflict-affected areas following a recent surge in violence that threatens to undermine ongoing peacebuilding efforts.

In a strongly worded press statement issued on Sunday, July 27, the government disclosed that the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order and safeguard lives and property. Curfews are also being intensified as part of enhanced security measures.

“We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement said.

This decisive move follows a string of violent incidents in the Bawku area, which has been the center of a protracted chieftaincy dispute between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups. The government expressed concern that the fresh wave of attacks could derail recent progress toward resolving the conflict.

The statement commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, for his ongoing mediation efforts, which were reportedly yielding results with the support of the Nayiri (overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area) and the Zugraana (chief of the Kusasi). According to the government, the latest violent episodes have forced it to adopt a more robust stance to preserve peace and protect lives.

“The Otumfuo mediation, with the genuine help of Nayiri and Zugraana, had almost brought finality to the conflict until the very recent killings,” the government noted.

Residents in the affected areas have been urged to cooperate fully with security forces, avoid acts of violence, and support the peace process. Authorities also acknowledged that the peace enforcement measures may inconvenience peace-loving residents but maintained that such actions are necessary for the greater good.

“The Government of Ghana remains committed to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and other affected areas and is taking every necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of all residents, including students,” the statement emphasized.

The press statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.

The Bawku conflict, which has simmered for years, has claimed lives and displaced many residents, raising concerns among human rights advocates and the international community. Calls have intensified in recent weeks for a durable resolution that incorporates justice, inclusive dialogue, and a sustained development agenda.
