Women, Media and Change (WOMEC) has called for urgent national action to safeguard sexual and reproductive health and rights, warning that misinformation, stigma and unequal access to services continue to threaten the health and dignity of women and young people.

Marking Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Day 2026, the organisation stressed that sexual and reproductive health and rights are fundamental human rights that must not be negotiated. WOMEC noted that despite existing national and international commitments, many women and girls still face barriers in accessing comprehensive services, contributing to preventable maternal health complications, unsafe practices and far-reaching social and economic consequences.

In a press statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr. Charity Binka, WOMEC demanded that government and other duty bearers move beyond policy rhetoric to concrete implementation. The organisation called for increased domestic investment in reproductive health, strengthened health systems and the expansion of youth-friendly services that are accessible, affordable and free from stigma.

WOMEC further urged authorities to prioritise early detection and quality care for conditions such as cervical cancer and sexually transmitted infections, which it said remain underdiagnosed and undertreated. It also emphasised the need for comprehensive sexuality education, protection of reproductive rights and the promotion of consent and safe practices.

The organisation appealed to the media to consistently highlight sexual and reproductive health issues and counter misinformation through responsible, evidence-based reporting that holds policymakers accountable.

“Our health is our right. Our rights demand action,” the statement concluded, calling for bold and sustained efforts to ensure every woman and girl can make informed choices, access quality healthcare without discrimination and live in dignity.
