The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed that a large-scale search and rescue operation is underway at sea following an attack on fishing vessels off the coast of Senya Beraku in the Central Region.
In a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations at General Headquarters, Burma Camp, Accra, the military disclosed that the Ghana Navy, with support from the Ghana Air Force, has been conducting a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation since dawn.
According to the statement, the operation is taking place approximately 35 nautical miles offshore, following what authorities describe as an attack on some fishing vessels operating within the general area.
The development follows earlier reports by Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, who indicated that more than 50 Ghanaian fishermen were believed to have been kidnapped in a suspected pirate attack near Senya Beraku.
While the Ghana Armed Forces statement does not officially confirm the number of victims, it acknowledges the attack and emphasizes that operations are actively ongoing.
Military Appeals for Calm
The Armed Forces has appealed to the public to remain calm as efforts intensify to secure the affected fishermen and stabilize the situation at sea.
“The operation is ongoing and the Ghana Armed Forces appeals to all to remain calm. Further details to be communicated,” the release stated.
The statement was signed by Veronica Adzo Arhin, Captain (Ghana Navy) and Acting Director General of Public Relations.
Coastal Community on Edge
The reported attack has sent shockwaves through Senya Beraku and surrounding coastal communities, where fishing remains the primary source of livelihood. Families of the missing fishermen are anxiously awaiting official updates as naval and air surveillance operations continue offshore.
Security analysts say the incident, if confirmed as piracy, would represent one of the most significant maritime security threats recorded off Ghana’s coast in recent times.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any suspects have been identified or whether contact has been established with the affected vessels.
This is a developing story. More updates will follow as information becomes available.
